When she opened her eyes again, the hall was plunged in darkness, and Mr. Alphonse's desk was empty. Not a sound, except the solemn tick-tock of the clock, whose golden hands pointed to ten o'clock at night. “Hello?” called Chloé. Her voice bounced between the shelves and came back to her, thin and small: "...llo?" Then, at the far end of the aisle, a green book slid off a shelf and dropped at her feet.

“A book!” cried Chloé. The pirate scratched his beard, cross at having lost. The sails swelled, the deck shook, and a giant page unfolded before them like a gangplank. They raced across it, chased by paper seagulls. “Well done,” Fil panted. “But did you see? The man with the lantern was watching us from the dock.” Chloé turned around. There was no one there.

Chloé thought of Fil, of his empty page, of the ink stain trembling on his side. “My name,” she answered. “Chloé.” The key lit up. Behind the door there was no city, but the library hall, and in front of them, sitting on a stool, Mr. Alphonse, his lantern at his feet. “Well done,” he murmured. “You were faster than I hoped.”
